Volleyball is a sport played by two teams on a playing court divided by a net. There are different versions available for specific circumstances in order to offer the versatility of the game to everyone.
The object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent's court, and to prevent the opponent's from doing the same. The team has three hits in addition to the block contact for returning the ball.
The ball is put in play with a service over the net to the opponent's. The rally continues until the ball is grounded on the playing court, goes 'out' or a team fails to return it properly.
In Volleyball, the team winning a rally scores a point (Rally Point System). When the receiving team wins a rally it gains a point and the right to serve, and its players rotate one position clockwise.

In 1895, William G.Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of Basketball, Baseball, Tennis, and Handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than Basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called Mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from Tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.
During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "Volleyball" would be a more description name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College in America the first game of "Volleyball" was played.
In 1900, a special ball was designed for the sport, and the height of the net was later increased to 2.24 Metres for Women and 2.43 Metres for Men.

In the early 1920's most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California, where the first Volleyball courts were put up on the beach, where families played 6-a-side. In 1927 Beach Volleyball became the principal sport in many French nudist camps, and just 3 years later in 1930 the first 2-a-side Beach Volleyball game was played in Santa Monica.
Now, in 2001, there are 800 million players world-wide who play Volleyball at least once a week.
